In a government set up under the welfare state system, the need for personal responsibility is inherently abandoned by the strong presence and power of the central government. Rather than there being any need for self-responsibility, the welfare state imposes its own agenda upon society, seemingly for the benefit of all. Promoters of the welfare state claim that it promotes ideals such as equality and security; however, this system of government sacrifices liberty and freedom in favor of an overly powerful system of state sovereignty.

The welfare state neglects personal responsibility because it reduces the liberties of those bound by the system, thus restricting their freedom to act according to their own convictions. In order to fully express responsibility for ones own needs and actions, one inherently must have full freedom to do so. It is simply impossible to expect someone to possess personal responsibility when the system of government takes on these responsibilities itself. As government planning and control continuously increases, our individual liberty naturally trends downward.

Contrast this with the free market government model, which prioritizes private property, self government, and maximum protection of God-given rights while maintaining as little state interference as possible. People are left to fend for themselves in this type of system, the thought of which creates panic amongst many who have fallen under the spell of the socialist mindset.

Those who believe that humans, being imperfect and flawed, are incapable of being responsible for themselves, fail to realize that government is itself nothing more than an entity consisting of the same imperfect and flawed human beings, rather than some perfect, elevated being to be hailed as sovereign as many so hold it. Why, then, would it make sense to restrict individual liberty in favor of some other flawed human or group thereof making our decisions for us? While no form of perfection is attainable by a flawed species such as mankind, state government, in its best form, is limited in its power and control, whilst promoting personal responsibility and freedom among its people. This is, indeed, the exact opposite of the socialistic welfare state.🔹
